10 Scariest Sci-Fi Movie Endings Ever

1. The Mist

Invasion of the Body Snatchers Donald Sutherland

In this Stephen King adaptation, David is a regular family man whose hometown is suddenly infested by murderous Lovecraftian monsters. As David watches the creatures slaughtering the townsfolk, including his wife, he urges a group of survivors to escape with him.

As David drives away in a car, his vehicle runs out of gas. With a towering beast just behind them, David shoots his companions dead, believing a quick death is a better fate than being ripped apart by a hellish monster. After running out of bullets, David walks out of his car, seemingly giving himself up to the demonic beast. However, he sees the army has successfully stopped the invasion, meaning he murdered his group for nothing. As David lets out an agonising scream, the screen cuts to black.

Interestingly, the producers hated this scene so much, they told the director, Frank Darabont, they would double the budget if he changed it. However, Darabont had concocted this ending decades prior and thought this was the perfect movie to utilise it. As a result, he shot the film the way he envisioned it, creating one of the darkest conclusions in movie history.
