2. Planet Of The Apes

In Franklin J Schaffner's 1968 classic, Charlton Heston plays an astronaut called George Taylor who crash-lands on a planet after spending many years in suspended animation. This world is populated by intelligent apes who use humans as slaves. When George tries to explain to The Ape Council that he is from a distant planet, they disregard his claims and order for him to be lobotomised.

An ape called Dr. Zaius admits to George that he knows he's telling the truth and compels him to investigate an area called The Forbidden Zone to validate his claims. However, he insists that George will not like what he finds. After George reaches The Forbidden Zone, he discovers the ruins of the Statue of Liberty, proving he has been on Earth the entire time. George falls to his knees and breaks down, condemning humanity for destroying society.

Planet of the Apes' ending may be universally known but that doesn't minimise its impact. The conclusion is more disturbing rather than outright scary but it doesn't stop viewers feeling unnerved upon seeing the final shot of Lady Liberty.
