10 Scariest Short Horror Films You've Probably Never Seen
3. La Cabina (1972)
First airing on Spanish television in 1972, director Antonio Mercero’s - who co-wrote the script with star José Luis Garci - La Cabina begins with a group of men setting up a telephone box in the middle of a town square.
Later that day, a regular man (Garci) enters the box to make a call after dropping off his son. However, things go horribly wrong when he finds himself inexplicably trapped inside when the door closes.
A crowd soon assembles as passers-by try to free the man, as they bring chairs and laugh hysterically at every failed attempt to rescue him from his unlikely prison. Light-hearted and almost farcical in nature, the first half of this International Emmy-winning short plays out more like a dark comedy than a horror film. It’s only when the men from earlier return to retrieve the telephone box where La Cabina takes a decidedly sinister turn.
The longer and further they drive for, the more panic sets in as the man realises just how helpless his situation is. By the time they reach their destination, the upbeat tone from before is gone as his worst nightmares confirmed.
Despite its cheerful beginnings, La Cabina ends on an unexpectedly dark conclusion.
