10 Sci-Fi Fan Theories That Make The Films Better

6. Mad Max Is Road Warrior's Feral Kid All Grown Up - Fury Road

Fury Road may have breathed new life into George Miller’s franchise with a pulse pounding and socially resonant slice of intense sci-fi action, but the thrill-ride didn’t manage to revive one pivotal figure from earlier instalments—the eponymous Max Rockatansky.

Okay so the titular vigilante road warrior does feature in the film, but his face is looking pretty different, having transformed from the Mel Gibson of the first three films into British Bronson star Tom Hardy at some point. Maybe it’s age and Gibson’s directorial career—or maybe it’s that the film’s Max is actually the Feral Kid from the second instalment of the series, Road Warrior.

Where’s the evidence? Well, Max left the kid a music box, one of few things which Fury Road’s Max has in his possession. Max barely talks in Fury Road, communicating mostly in grunts and assorted noises much like the Feral Kid, and Max sounds unsure of his name when he finally identifies himself near the film’s close—because he’s borrowing it from his former mentor. It’s a rare theory which managed to impress even the film’s director, who admitted he hadn’t planned it but couldn’t argue with the logic.
