10 Sci-Fi Horror Movie Fates Worse Than Death

8. Splice - Raising The Baby Of A Genetic Monster

Slither Movie
Warner Bros.

So it’s not uncommon for weird pregnancies and demon-like children to be used as horror devices (for example, anything from Inseminoid to Alien), but Splice offers something that could never be considered ‘normal’ in any cinematic capacity.

The film sees two scientists (Elsa and Clive) experimenting with combining human and animal DNA to accidentally create a complex, ever-growing and changing humanoid creature that they name Dren.

This amphibious, carnivorous freakshow of a monster contains some of Elsa’s DNA and, as such, Elsa develops a motherly bond with it and chooses to protect and raise it instead of terminating it as planned. Spoiler alert: this doesn’t go well for her.

Dren kills Elsa’s cat, puts her career in jeopardy, has sex with Elsa’s sort-of-boyfriend and then to top it all off metamorphosis into a male and assaults Elsa, impregnating her.

An unwanted pregnancy can be a nightmare in the best circumstances, but an unwanted pregnancy caused by a freak of nature monster (who is also kind of your own child and who killed your boyfriend) is more of a terrifying fever-dream.

After being pressured and paid-off by her previous employer, Elsa keeps the pregnancy and we can only imagine what horrors are in store for her as it develops and comes to birth and beyond...
