Interestingly enough, a remake of the classic Sci-Fi epic was in the works - with Matthew Vaughn signed on to direct - but it was severely impacted by the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy debuted and made producers worry about creating such a similar project. Therefore in a way, the Marvel superheroes owe the classic movie a chance at a new life.

Flash Gordon is precisely the kind of film you would expect Peter Quill of reference, as his constant discussion of nostalgic pop-culture was a big part of his character. Maybe that fact that he hasn't been referenced shows the potential that Flash could exist in the Marvel world.
