10 Sci-Fi Movie Death Scenes That Came Out Of Nowhere

6. Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) - 2001: A Space Odyssey

Stanley Kubrick's revolutionary space epic 2001: A Space Odyssey remains even today as one of cinema's most impressive and iconic motion pictures. Sporting a claustrophobic setting and some deeply effective scenes of threat and tension, the film is choc full of shocking reveals, revelations and violence.

In the film, Dr Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) finds himself on a space walk, attempting to fix a broken antenna. HAL 9000, one of cinema's greatest antagonists, takes this opportunity to take control of Poole's pod, crashing it into the astronaut and sending both Poole and his pod spinning off into space. The worst part, though? Poole's oxygen supply is severed in the collision, so as he drifts away he slowly suffocates.

It's a harsh end that comes as a massive surprise. You know something bad is coming, but nothing quite that extreme or sudden.

But that's what makes it work, the action officially cementing the mysterious but certainly evil intentions of HAL.
