10 Sci-Fi Movie Fates Worse Than Death

8. Trapped In A World Without Knowing If It's Real - Inception

Christopher Nolan's Inception is one of those movies you either loved because you followed the story, or you hated because you didn't. It makes sense, as it is rather convoluted and layered, but putting that aside, it offers up a fate worse than death, which is not knowing if you're dreaming or awake.

The movie is about a thief named Dom Cobb, who steals information from people by invading their dreams. Because he is constantly going into other people's subconscious, it can become difficult in knowing whether he is in a dream, or in reality. To deal with this, he has a totem.

For anyone playing around in a dream, a totem is an item which is special to each person. They can use their totem to determine if they are in a dream or not. For Cobb, he used a top, which would spin indefinitely while in a dream, but fall over in the real world.

The top belonged to his deceased wife, Mal, who was once trapped with him for five hours (50 years) in limbo, where dreamers can no longer tell if they're in a dream or not. He managed to reactivate the top to bring her out, but she believed she was still dreaming, so she killed herself to wake up. What's worse, she framed Cobb for her death, so he would be forced to "wake up" as well, effectively killing herself and ruining his life.
