7. Being Exiled To The Island Of Manhattan - Escape From New York
In Escape from New York, the near-future world of...1997 features a United States riddled with crime. To deal with the country's worst criminals, the government seals off the island of Manhattan, converting it into a maximum-security prison. The bridges are all mined, and a 50-foot wall surrounds the island.
The prison is impossible to escape from, and anyone who gets imprisoned there automatically receives a life sentence. Because of this, the people imprisoned on the island form into various gangs, and the overall ruler is a man who calls himself the Duke of New York.
In the movie, the Duke of New York was able to get his hands on the President of the United States after Air Force One was hijacked, and it's up to Snake Plissken to get him back. When Snake is making his way to the disembarkment zone, a woman's voice can be heard on an intercom.
Among other things, she says, "You now have the option to be terminated and cremated on the premises." Essentially, getting stuck on the island for the rest of your life was such a terrible fate, people preferred to be killed rather than make the trip.
