Ridley Scott's Prometheus might be one of the most visually stunning and ambitious films in the science fiction genre, but it might also be one of the most divisive for the community as well. The film's ambiguity, noticeable lack of Xenomorphs and unresolved plot points went a long way in pissing fans off, but at least it could point to having a brilliant lead character in Elizabeth Shaw.

Noomi Rapace's heroine was brave, driven and competent throughout the movie, an absolute necessity for a franchise that gave the world Ellen Ripley, so it was natural that fans were expecting her to have a fitting run of things in the sequel, Alien: Covenant.

There must have been more than a few jaws dropping to the floor, then, when the android David from Prometheus stepped on screen and explained that Shaw had died inbetween the two films. According to David, the two of them accidentally released a virus on the Alien home world that Shaw eventually succumbed to.

In reality, it's shown that David actually killed Prometheus' lead character himself via a quick shot of her dissected corpse in his laboratory.

It's such a fast writing off, and comes at the point where everything begins spiralling out of control, that most fans probably either missed the shot entirely, or just assumed it must have been a trick that such a brilliant character could be killed off so shamelessly.
