John Carpenter's film, telling the story of an arctic research station being brought to it's knees by a parasitic alien, remains one of the most gruesome and beloved horror films ever, particularly renowned for it's use of practical effects and it's intensely nerve-wracking blood test scene.

One thing that has remained a mystery from this film however is the ambiguous ending, and it has been causing debate amongst fans ever since.

Following the infamous blood test scene to determine who amongst them has been infected, the men begin to turn on each other as paranoia and hysteria sets in. MacReady (played by Kurt Russell), with the help of a flamethrower, manages to defeat those believed to be infected, until it is just him and one other who remain.

In the closing moments, he shares an exchange with Childs (Keith David) as they look at each other with suspicion; is one of them infected, none of them, or perhaps both of them? The film leaves us with this mystery and has provided fan theory fuel ever since.

The ending is undeniably bleak and that somehow leaves the unanswered questions even more potent.
