While we're at it, let's ruin another one!

Unlike several of the other aliens on this list, the species that spawned the creature known as E.T. are a kindly bunch who just want to collect some flower samples.

The botanists' spaceship lands in California in the '80s and the stout fellas go about their business. One of them gets distracted by the bright lights of a nearby city, which proves to be his undoing.

The long arm of the law turn up, causing the aliens to flee. In their haste to escape, they leave poor E.T. stranded on Earth. The rest, as they say, is cinema history.

We should be grateful in a way that E.T.'s mates abandoned him, otherwise we wouldn't have got this banging film. However, when you think about it, it's pretty shocking that they just hung him out to dry like that.

Not only did they leave him at the mercy of the American police system (a terrifying thought), but they didn't even notice he was gone! He needed to "phone home" for them to come and get him!

With friends like that, who needs enemies...
