10 Sci-Fi Movie Openings That Get Worse The More You Think About It

2. Back To The Future

On the surface, the opening to 1985's Back to the Future is as whimsical as the rest of the film.

Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) lets himself into Doc Brown's (Christopher Lloyd) office to plug his guitar into a giant amplifier. He plays a chord that blows him backwards into a huge stack of papers, before smiling.

But there's more to this light-hearted jape than meets the eye.

Aside from the devastating hearing loss Marty will have just sustained, there's also the question of why a young man is hanging out round an old guy's house. It's because Marty's home life is awful; his parents' marriage is in disarray, his siblings aren't nice to him, it's all a bit bleak.

Marty himself tells Jennifer that he doesn't want to end up like his parents, which would explain why he'd rather spend his time with Doc.

He clearly finds kinship in the scientist, an outsider himself due to his fascination with strange experiments. Whilst it's nice that these two have found each other, it's sad that they have both been shunned by society and their own families.

Well, that's a classic movie ruined forever.

You're welcome, everyone!
