10 Sci-Fi Movie Sequels Better Than The Original

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man thrilled moviegoers in 2002 and is credited for keeping the superhero movie genre alive by finally giving Marvel's most beloved hero the long overdue spotlight he deserved. It was a great debut but that wouldn't even be Spidey's highest point because the franchise would go on to reach greater heights in sequel Spider-Man 2.

A sequel that improved upon the first outing, the second film brought back the entertainment factor that was present during its predecessor but it paired it with a much deeper emotional story - one that was aided by an incredibly well-crafted tragic villain in Doctor Octopus who was so good that some have gone as far as to say that Alfred Molina's complex antagonist was actually superior to his comic book counterpart.

Spider-Man 2 is considered by many to be Spidey's greatest big-screen adventure. A genuine triumph, it reminded us that poignant human stories can still function in the madness of a comic book movie environment - something many of us needed reminding of in a post-Batman & Robin world - and, in doing so, it outshone the admittedly solid original.
