10 Sci-Fi Movie Villains That Killed The Hero

Biting the bullet in the most shocking ways.

By now, we all take some of objective truths for granted. The sky is blue, the Earth is round, and good ultimately triumphs over evil. Particularly in some of our favourite sci-fi creations, when we sit down to watch our favourite heroes duke it out with a megalomaniac titan or a dashing rogue, nine times out of ten we'll see the triumphant hero with a grin on his face and a boot up the behind of our vengeful villain.

But every now and then that single time out of ten comes along and throws us for a loop. Suddenly the sky is red, the Earth is flat and everything we've been taught to believe turns out to be a bald-faced lie.

In those times we see the villain; royalty-free laser sword in hand, burning into the wound of our fallen hero, and we simply don't know what to do next.

Honestly, though? I reckon we love it.

Celebrating this peak of subversive storytelling, here are some of the best stories in which the heroes don't come out on top. Worse still - they don't even come out alive.

10. Blade Runner 2049

Terminator Dark Fate John Connor Death
Warner Bros.

Following on from the superb story of the original film, Blade Runner 2049 focuses on the replicant known as K, a "Blade Runner" sent to retire other replicants and who just so happens to be a replicant himself.

When a routine mission leads to the discovery that one particular replicant was able to naturally conceive and birth a child, K is forced to keep these findings a secret while attempting to root out their whereabouts.

To nobody's surprise, the child is revealed to be that of the original Blade Runner Rick Deckard. While all of this is going on, the founder of the replicant producing Wallace Corporation and all around shady dude Niander Wallace hears of the child's existence. Because of a 'shortage' of replicants, Wallace makes it his personal mission to find the child and bring them in to study.

Sending out his enforcer Luv, everything ultimately leads to a bit of a kerfuffle over the fate of the child. Deckard is kidnapped, they are both inducted into a replicant resistance and the whole story ultimately ends with K bleeding to death after defending Deckard and his daughter from the clutches of the Wallace Corporation.

A shady dude, indeed.
