Now something of a hero-veteran, Batman has an all new threat to contend with. The Joker has been terrorising Gotham and its citizens seemingly with little cause or motive. All that seems clear is one thing - he has serious beef with everything Batman stands for.

Although, Batman isn't the only hero of the story. As an up-and-coming defense attorney and love rival to Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent is certainly a man with a lot to offer to the city of Gotham. After The Joker kidnaps Dent and girlfriend Rachel Dawes, an explosion at the factory he was held in leaves Dent with half of his face scorched beyond repair.

Stalking him to the hospital, The Joker questions Dent on his morality, tipping him over the edge and into madness, turning him against Gotham and all he once sought to save. A brief exchange with Commissioner Jim Gordon's family causes Batman to intervene, ending up with him accidentally killing Dent in an attempt to save Gordon's son.

This one is admittedly a bit of a stretch, but there is more than a ring of truth if you think about how The Joker's plans led to Harvey's ultimate fate.
