10 Sci-Fi Movie Villains That Killed The Hero

5. The Matrix: Revolutions

Over the course of the earlier Matrix films, the insane Agent Smith had steadily broken away from the stringent rules of The Matrix and becoming something of a rogue element, infecting each human mind with his own "Smith virus". By the end of Revolutions, Smith had amassed an army that not even the all-powerful machines themselves could stop.

With nothing left to lose, Neo and the machines agree to a bargain; in exchange for Neo eradicating Smith from The Matrix for good, Zion would be spared by the machines.

Battling each other to a standstill at first, Smith gradually gains the upper hand until Neo appears beaten. Surrendering himself to Smith, his body is taken over and all hope seems lost for Zion. Only when a light burns from the Neo-Smith's eyes do we realise that this was Neo's plan all along; to pick apart Agent Smith from the inside.

With both hero and villain obliterating each other, all signs pointed to Neo's demise as he was carried off by the tendrils of the machines.

Of course, The Matrix 4 being released in 2021 will likely change this outcome, but you can't deny how poignant this ending was at the time.
