Richard Kelly's 2009 thriller The Box touts a deliciously tantalising dilemma - what you press a button on a box which immediately netted you $1 million, albeit at the cost of somebody else's life you didn't know?

This fascinatingly grim question is posed by the shadowy Arlington Steward (Frank Langella) to Norma and Arthur Lewis (James Marsden and Cameron Diaz) at the start of the story. As so many of us surely would, the couple agree to push the button.

But predictably the outcome isn't good for them, ultimately resulting in Norma's demise at Arthur's hand as part of a deal made with Steward to cure their son's sudden onset of deafness and blindness.

It's also revealed that Steward has actually collaborating with otherworldly entities - implied to be aliens - the entire time to test whether or not humanity is actually worth preserving.

Needless to say, the film suggests the results haven't been too encouraging so far, even as Steward continues to conduct the experiments as the end credits roll.
