10 Sci-Fi Movies That Almost Had Way Better Endings
3. Jennings Spots The Kid Who Stole His Engagement Ring - Paycheck
John Woo's sci-fi thriller Paycheck is something of a divisive film, but the part of the film that received the most criticism was the ending, perhaps, which always felt a bit too upbeat and silly compared to the relatively complicated events proceeding it. Paycheck, based on a novel by Phillip K. Dick, is all memory wipes and complex plot twists: trying to outline the plot here would be an exercise in futility. If you've seen it, hough, you'll remember that it ends with Jennings and his love interest, Porter, realising that Jennings managed to carry out one final act using a machine that can predict the future: the winning lottery numbers for a future draw, which results in a $90 million win for them both. The alternate ending, which wound up on the cutting room floor, would have scrapped this Hollywood ending and would have seen the pair pondering what to do with their lives in the aftermath of the film's events, only for Jennings to spot the kid child who stole his engagement ring at the beginning coming out of a pawn shop. He then goes in and comes out, before asking Porter if she believes in fate (suggesting that he proposes to her). It's less cheesy than the ending Woo opted for, and doesn't grant the heroes a wildly over the top ending. Instead, it leaving audiences to decide what happens next.
