10 Sci-Fi Movies That Break The Genre

5. The Lobster

Picturehouse Entertainment

Yorgos Lanthimos has very quickly built himself a reputation as a film-maker who does things a bit different, and that is certainly true of his brilliant foray into sci-fi territory The Lobster. The film is based in a dystopian near-future where people are pressured into coupling, and those who fail to do so before a certain time are brought to a hotel and given one last chance to find 'love' or they will be turned into an animal of their choosing.

The film somehow manages to be more unusual than its baffling premise but it is brilliantly unique. Lanthimos' signature style is rife throughout the film as a narrative plays out that is unlike anything that has come before in the genre. Despite the themes clearly playing into the genre, The Lobster hardly feels like a sci-fi film at all.

It is wonderfully acted by a brilliant cast who all do their part to create perhaps the most original entrant into the science fiction genre of all time. Lanthimos' style is not for everyone but it is hard not to admire the sheer originality he can produce within any genre.
