10 Sci-Fi Movies That Break The Genre
4. Blade Runner
Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is widely regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time, spawning so many copycat films that it is almost lost in time how incredibly ground-breaking it was. Much like Alien, Blade Runner was the forefather of so many integral science fiction tropes that we see today - most notably the stunning visuals which gave way to so much for the genre.
Blade Runner managed to take the best elements of what had come before it, and added new layers to it, not only visually but in terms of storytelling and characterisation. Blade Runner really broke ground and garnered a new wave of respect for the science fiction genre as more than just a spectacle to be enjoyed.
Based loosely off Phillip K. Dicks 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?', the film is predictably intelligent and layered and it is easy to see why it has had the influence it has. From the sympathetic villain to the incredible sub-text and layers of story, Blade Runner was undoubtedly a film that did thing differently from what had come before. Its influence has been such, that you almost forget how much it stood out.
