10 Sci-Fi Movies That Confused Everyone

1. The Fountain (2006)

Possession 1981
Regency Enterprises

Darren Aronovsky's polarizing romantic epic split critics into two categories with those who praised it's bold, fantastical storytelling, and the ones that found it a plodding, pretentious mess. For us lowly filmgoers, The Fountain checks a ton of boxes for movies that will undoubtedly confuse a general audience.

A non-linear timeline of multiple stories that jump back and forth between one another? Check. Actors playing multiple roles that may or may not be the same characters in each timeline? Check. A narrative filled to the brim with metaphors, allegory, and crazy visuals? Double-check.

The film is denser than a neutron star, with many scenes you could describe as simply a series of shining lights burning into your retina's while Hugh Jackman stares back at you in wide-eyed elation.

It's supposed to be a metaphysical love story that explores the realization that we are all going to die and we need to embrace that idea. All three stories follow people who have discovered trees that will apparently extend your life.

When one of the trees is inside a bubble traveling through space towards a dying star, however, things can tend to get a little hard to interpret.

No matter what your take away is, the film is a beautiful experience to behold and if you can wrap your head around it, it's said to be a brilliant take on accepting your own mortality.
