10 Sci-Fi Movies That Confused Everyone

Donnie Darko is one of the hardest to understand films that somehow gained mainstream popularity.

A young man named Donnie is lured from his bed and told by a dude in a freaky rabbit costume the world will end within twenty-nine days, right before a jet engine crashes through his bedroom ceiling. What follows is a strange journey that combines psychological horror, science-fiction, and awkward teenage romance.

Donnie discovers he was meant to die when the jet engine hit his home. He goes out and learns a ton of complex ideas about multi-verse theory and by the end of the film can somehow rewind the entire movie to fix things.

This one requires some knowledge of how tangent universes function and that when he was woken up and lured from his bed a separate timeline was made. Now both timelines are doomed unless Donnie can close the loop that's been created.

How Donnie achieves this it is incredibly hard to understand, and the film doesn't make it clear just what is going on when the film decides to rewind and suddenly everything is OK in the end. In short, he uses his knowledge of creating time portals and telekinesis to ensure the engine goes back in time to hit him, sacrificing himself.

The magnitude of all the moving parts is a lot to comprehend for even a seasoned movie-goer, but once you do get a grasp on what's occurring it makes an already unique and moving experience even more brilliant.
