10 Sci-Fi Movies That Confused Everyone
5. Possession (1981)
Andrzej Żuławski's hidden Sci-fi horror gem Possession is one of the most intense experiences cinema has to offer, and it's also one of the most mind-meltingly confusing too.
It follows the breakdown of a marriage, where the husband falls in love with a clone of his wife with green eyes. The resulting fallout as they fight over custody of their child, both having new relationships and the wife's increasingly erratic and bizarre behavior is sheer insanity.
That freakish behavior involves her oozing a variety of colorful fluids in an infamously crazy miscarriage scene, and keeping a strange alien creature in her house that she feeds to people and mates with.
You never learn what this thing is, and there are a variety of unexplained phenomena throughout the movie. Characters often speak in allegories and take such sudden wild actions that it's honestly difficult to know just what will happen next.
By the end, both are dead, their doppelgangers end up meeting each other and their son drowns himself in the bathtub while explosions are heard in the background.
It is maddening trying to understand what is happening, and the internet is flooded with multiple theories of just what it all means. If you aren't willing to dig deeper into it, the film will just leave you confused.
It not only contains one of the most visceral breakdowns of a relationship seen on film, but it also gives a metaphysical portrayal of the emotions that come from the trauma that accompanies it.
