10 Sci-Fi Movies That Get Better The Deeper You Go

2. Terminator

You'd think that a dressed-up monster/slasher horror movie about a killer robot sent back in time to stop a future rebellion against tyrannical AI overlords would only be able to exist on the surface level. The fact that the film was so cheaply made and focuses so tightly on its comparatively simple plot and characters seems also to fit with that idea.

But then when you start to really explore the unseen aggressors in this film - Skynet, sitting on their futuristic throne of skulls - you get way more depth and a new reason to love Terminator.

After all, it's possible to pick away at the plot and the film's establishing lore to come to the conclusion that Skynet's REAL agenda was keeping humanity alive, in order to continue persecuting them. The system would be defunct and redundant without human targets and coming to that realisation really does add to the film.
