10 Sci-Fi Movies Where Everyone Dies
2. The Cabin In The Woods
A group of American college students abscond to a secluded cabin in the woods to spend a weekend partying, getting high and getting laid. Standard horror movie fare, right?
Wrong. The titular cabin is an experiment being controlled by an organisation of lab scientists and white collar workers who set up similar yearly trials in order to appease the Ancient Ones, a group of deities that live beneath the Earth's surface and will rise and destroy the world if they don't receive their sacrifices.
The protagonists are the archetypes of the cabin in the woods movie (the jock, the geek, the clown, the virgin and the hussy), and are met with equally archetypal villains (first zombies, then just about every other monster from the history of horror), triggered by a room full of nasties in the basement - puzzle boxes, Necronomicons, cursed objects, you name it.
As if the extensive and creative bloodshed that wipes out not only most of the main cast but the architects of these rituals wasn't enough, the world quite literally comes to an end in the conclusion, as the failure to offer sacrifices to the subterranean gods brings them above ground, killing the remaining survivors and dooming the rest of humanity.
Oh, and Chris Hemsworth dies jumping a dirt bike over a ravine into an invisible forcefield.
