10 Scumbag Horror Movie Protagonists We STILL Rooted For

1. Max Renn - Videodrome

Videodrome's embattled protagonist Max Renn (James Woods) is an undeniable sleazebag - the president of a Toronto TV station specialising in sensationalist content, and who can barely contain his giddiness when he discovers the titular snuff film broadcast he decides to illicitly transmit on his own station.

Max may be an unrepentant peddler of brain-rotting trash, but at the same time, he couldn't have anticipated that Videodrome would literally rot people's brains, least of all his own.

Given that Max quickly gets in way over his head and is ultimately helpless to fall victim to the culture war unfolding around him, it's tough not to feel for him and wish him a fate better than, well, what eventually happens.

It helps that James Woods gives a charismatic and somewhat charming performance in the role, even though Max is a shameless, morally fringe opportunist at the best of times.
