This deleted subplot formed an alternate ending to the much maligned Amazing Spider-Man sequel. For all the film's faults (villain, effects, script, villain), the moment they ended up cutting from the film was actually quite good and would have formed a solid ending to the story whilst setting up the then-planned Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Whilst visiting Gwen Stacy's (Emma Stone) grave near the end of the film, the subplot would have kicked in when Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) was suddenly approached by his believed-dead father (Campbell Scott), who tells him he's sorry for leaving him.

The two share a moment, in which Garfield delivers a great performance, and then they talk about why Richard came back and how he knows about Peter's identity as Spider-Man.

It also gives the films the chance to hit fans with the iconic line: "With great power comes great responsibility", and adds another layer to Peter deciding to don the suit once more.

However, though filmed and eventually released to the public, the subplot is not actually canon, as the finished film makes it clear Peter's parents really are dead.
