10 Secret Subplots You Didn’t Know Were Cut From Popular Movies

2. Lou's Tragic Past - Me Before You (2016)

Catching Fire
Warner Bros.

Me Before You was a cliched but sweet rom-com starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. Claflin stars as Will Traynor, a banker who ends up paralysed from the neck down after being hit by a motorcycle. Clarke stars opposite him as Lou Clark, who is hired as Will's carer after losing her job at a local cafe.

Inevitably, the pair fall in love and the whole film reads like your typical rom-com - funny, charming, heartbreaking and moving.

Based on the book by Jojo Moyes, the film ended up cutting a major aspect of the author's original story; a devastating subplot detailing Lou's trauma after being sexually assaulted in high school. Readers were put off from the movie because of this story's removal, as it helps explain Lou's desire to live in a small town when she has the whole world out there waiting for her.

It would be a harsh subplot, but perhaps necessary to exploring Lou's motivations whilst providing an added emotional kick with the film's conclusion.

Moyes, who also wrote the script, ultimately left it out because it didn't work on the big screen like it did in the book, and wouldn't have been as effective as she'd like.
