10 Secret Subplots You Didn’t Know Were Cut From Popular Movies

1. The Avoxes - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

The Avoxes are some of the most tragic figures in the Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series. They don't appear massively in the novels, but their role in the overall story remains pretty big.

Simply put, Avoxes are people punished by the Capitol for rebelling against their rule. Labelled as traitors, they have their tongues removed and are forced to become slaves, performing harsh manual labour and menial domestic tasks.

Two characters from the books, Lavinia and Darius, are cut almost entirely, though Lavinia appears as a background character in Catching Fire. Her brief appearance caused confusion amongst fans who had never read the books, and anger with fans of the novels.

Removing the heartbreaking Avox storyline from the films didn't necessarily hurt the plot, but in the books the servants are used to symbolise the brutality of Capitol and the ruthless nature of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). The film missed this trick, and did nothing but confuse fans with their brief, unexplored inclusion.
