10 Secrets From The Set Of Ridley Scott's Alien

2. The Who Helped Light The Egg Chamber

Before the viewer watched Ridley Scott's hand push around some meat or John Hurt being smothered by an alien, the latter's character could be seen entering that spooky egg chamber. It's an utterly stunning moment, with the egg-filled room being magnificently lit up by a blue light that spread across the ground beneath Kane's feet.

Were it not for The Who, or more specifically art director Anton Furst - who was helping the band with the lighting setup for their concert at Shepperton Studios - then this awesome scene may have looked quite different (via AVClub).

Roger Christian, Alien's art director, was a pal of Furst's and was invited to have a look at the work he was doing for The Who with lasers. After seeing how the lasers could be used to make the membranes they wanted to cover the eggs, Christian then ran off to get Scott.

Once the director had seen the brilliant effect, it wasn't long before the Alien team was using it in the scene, with Christian believing that they probably used the same projector Furst had been using for The Who here.

So, in a way, The Who helped create this eerie sequence.
