10 Seemingly Great Films That Unravelled On A Second Viewing
3. The Avengers
First things first: The Avengers isn't a bad movie, but given this article's premise - movies that unravelled on a second viewing - it would be just darn wrong not to include it. So the overarching problem with this flick isn't noticeably apparent during a first viewing of the movie - we know that the movie has to put the pieces into place, assemble the characters, and introduce a threat for them to fight against. And the first time we saw that, it was downright awesome: watching our Marvel heroes meeting one another was what we've been waiting to see for half a decade. But consider the second viewing of this movie, which is now - for the most part - a motion picture that basically exists to bring all those heroes together. Watching that happen for the second time, quite simply, just isn't fun. What was once exciting and hilarious proves itself to be a little building block-ish the next time around - we're waiting for the huge battle, but we've got to put all the pieces together again, and watching that happen, extended scene by extended scene, doesn't give the movie the natural feel of an isolated story. So it's really just half a great movie.
