10 Sequels That Completely Ignored The Previous Film
6. Prometheus
Sequel to: Alien; Aliens; Alien 3; Alien: Resurrection But not: Alien vs. Predator; Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem Here's where it gets extra confusing: While Prometheus makes a number of narrative and visual references to Ridley Scott and James Cameron's original two films, it also refuses to commit to being a direct prequel in plot terms, while it is unclear whether it considers the later Alien sequels to belong to this canon in Scott's mind. Meanwhile, it never quite commits to being a direct prequel setting up the events of the Alien narrative, making it more of another story set in the same universe. Robert Rodriguez's Predator sequel Predators, which acknowledges Predator 2 but ignores both Alien vs. Predator films, also goes some way to establishing an alternative canon in which Alien and Predator are in fact two separate, non-overlapping series. So which should I watch? The Alien vs. Predator films are irredeemably awful, not just an offence to their respective franchises, but also just terrible filmmaking if taken apart from their origins. Deeply flawed and full of plot holes though it may be, Prometheus has enough quality and style to be easily the preferable prequel.
