Freddy Vs Jason isn't a bad movie. The monster mashup does everything it says on the tin, and while the film as a whole might not be amazing, there's some great ideas in there, along with some spectacular fight sequences. Once they get going and start beating the s**t out of each other, you kinda forget all the dumb, bad parts.

It's just a shame it was only made possible by completely disregarding Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

During its final years, The Nightmare on Elm Street series was in dire straits. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare was one of the worst things since unsliced bread, a complete embarrassment for the once great series. Consequently, in order to reclaim the legacy of the project he started, Wes Craven returned for one final Nightmare movie.

Instead of picking up the baggage of the sequels, this flick went down a new direction, crafting a story where Craven's original Freddy flick was only a movie, and the entity of Krueger was haunting lead actress Heather Langenkamp. It re-contextualised the entire series, ending it on a meta, terrifying note - but a note that was immediately undone so more sequels could be made.
