Blair Witch is one of those long-running franchises that's still relying on the affection people have for the very first film. Over the years there have been two stabs at continuing the brand through sequels, but these were decades apart because the first try shat the bed so much it almost ruined everything.

Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows doesn't only crap all over the ending of the movie it followed, it craps all over the audience that cared enough to slug through this borefest. It systematically strips away all the uniqueness of the original, swapping out the found-footage framing for a generically shot horror movie, while ignoring the ambiguity of the Witch herself by explaining the lore in the most mind-numbing way possible.

That's bad enough, but the cardinal sin is that it reframes the first film as just that: a movie. The sequel clarifies that Heather and the gang's footage was all fake, a fictional movie that was released that inspired fans to venture to Burkittsville.
