10 Sequels That Were Cancelled Due To Box Office Flops

When Tim Story's embarrassingly broad and cartoonish film is still considered to be the best Fantastic Four movie to date, something has gone terribly wrong.

The nightmarish production on Josh Trank's recent reboot has entered the stuff of Hollywood legend; intended to be a darker and more cerebral take on the iconic superhero team, the most shocking thing about the film is in how little it resembles a film at all. Half-assed acting and dodgy special effects aside, Fantastic Four plays out like a feature-length prologue. Just when it gets going, it's over.

The turbulent relationship shared between Trank and 20th Century Fox during the making of this superhero screw-up dominated the conversation in the weeks leading up to the film's release, and the controversy got Trank thrown off a Star Wars spin-off he was supposed to be mounting over at Disney.

After Chronicle, everyone was expecting a masterpiece, but what we got was a flop, torn apart by the critics; it made just $168 million on a budget of $120 million. Somewhat unexpectedly, Fox announced that - despite the poor gross - they still intended to mount the sequel. And then they quietly took it back when, two months later, Fantastic Four 2 mysteriously vanished from the release slate.

Flame on? Flame off.
