10 Seriously Messed Up Psychological Horror Movies
5. Sacrilege (2020)
It doesn't get more psychological than manifestations of fear. So step aside Pennywise, because you're not the only horror movie character with the ability to bring a person's worst nightmares to life. Still, unlike the infamous clown, the villain in this movie is not one being but rather a whole village. Yikes.
Sacrilege follows a group of lifelong friends as they head off to the remote village of Mabon for a fun getaway. When they arrive, they find themselves battling against a pagan cult (of course, cults again) that plans to offer them up as sacrifices to their god. They do this by drugging them and making them face their worst fears.
The film's concept certainly lends itself to the typical stranger in a village becoming a victim of their traditions schlock. But, the focus on overcoming and surviving against your fear gives the movie an edge, making it more than your average horror flick. It provides each character with a chance to actively fight their own mind, leading to some truly compelling moments.
Besides the focus on character building and psychology, it's also a harrowing viewing experience, with some brutal hallucinations and shocking death scenes.
