10 Shocking (But Believable) Spider-Man: Homecoming Theories

The Theory

This comes from a rumour from a long time ago - before anything was really set in stone with Homecoming, in fact - but according to Latino Review, Spider-Man will be required to fight Iron Man as an audition for joining the Avengers team. Which of course is utter hogwash, BUT there might be a grain of truth in there.

The audition element.

Why It's Believable

Though Tony Stark is being presented as a sort of techy mentor figure to Parker, his presence in Homecoming is still a little confusing: he has no real reason to be invested in his life (aside from wanting to bang his auntie, of course). If you accept that he's actually "grooming" Peter to become a future Avenger (or a member of whatever team now exists in the wake of Civil War anyway), it makes a hell of a lot more sense.

It's rumoured that Stark's appearance will coincide with a Stark Expo in New York, so he has the means to check-in, but this could simply be a ruse so he can hide that he's actually spying on Spidey. That much happened in the comics (and forced Spidey to change sides in Civil War), and it would be a smart move for Stark to claim he's merely auditioning the youngster for his new super-team.
