10 Shocking (But Believable) Spider-Man: Homecoming Theories

2. Mary Jane WON'T Appear

The Theory

The question of Zendaya's character has been a long (and annoying one). She's listed officially as playing Michelle, but The Wrap "exclusively revealed" that she is actually playing Mary Jane Watson, despite Marvel's attempts to hide the fact.

On the contrary to that, Latino Review have stated that she's definitely not playing MJ - just plain old Michelle.

Why It's Believable

It's unnecessary at this stage to have Mary Jane even appear (there's no reason she can't move in next door at a later stage of the franchise), and using her would just draw direct comparison lines to what's gone before. Marvel do not want or need to do that.

Plus, the actress herself has said the following:

"My character is not romantic. My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she's so smart, she just feels like she doesn't need to talk to people, like 'My brain is so far ahead of you that you're just not really on my level.' So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she's deep. She's always thinking about something, always reading. I like that. And I also like that I don't really have to do anything for hair and makeup. I just get to walk in and walk out.”

Sound like MJ? "Not romantic" certainly doesn't, and sure, you could say she always starts unromantic because Peter likes her first, but she would still be a romantic object, and that absolutely doesn't fit.
