The significance of any comic book character dying is generally pretty minimal - they're all brought back, usually with a fancy new costume, at one point or another. So far, the MCU has managed to escape this trope with only one, very noticeable exception: Loki.

The first Thor film's finale seemingly saw Loki choose suicide over a life in which he wasn't the king of Asgard, though he was revealed to have survived in Avengers Assemble. Thor 2 seemingly saw Loki sacrifice himself for his brother, but it was again revealed to be another trick from the God of Mischief.

After two deaths and multiple redemption arcs, no one believed that Loki would ever be properly killed off, especially after making peace with Thor. Then the first five minutes of Infinity War happened. 'Nuff said.
