10 Shocking Horror Movies Where THIS Happened
3. 30 Years Down A Well - Ringu 2 (1999)
The Ring series has been churning out movies for more than twenty years, most of which never came close to Hideo Nakata's blisteringly scary Ringu. Hideo scales back the book's science fiction (the curse is literally a virus with which Sadako will repopulate the world with clones of herself) for straight up horror. Hideo had changed the story sufficiently enough to warrant introducing his own mythology/pseudo science, including the ordeal of Sadako herself, thrown down a well and left for dead.
The opening prologue of Ringu 2 picks up days after the original: of the two protagonists, one is dead and the other on the run, after unearthing Sadako's remains and unlocking the secret of the virus. As the police investigate the identity of the bones brought up from the well, an autopsy reveals a HORRIFYING detail.
Records revealed that the well was sealed when the property was sold thirty years ago, the body however, appears to have only died within the last year or two. Which means that she was alive in the well for THIRTY YEARS.
The Japanese films, at least the first two canonical entries, retain elements of sci-fi and folklore understandably missing from the US remake (a fine film in its own right), so this detail is so plausible within that setting.
Just the look on Takashi's face as we transition into the opening credits is enough to give you the heebie jeebies for weeks, in one of J-Horror's finest mic drops to date.
