5. Face Melt - Raiders of the Lost Ark

Steven Spielberg has, as you're about to see, something of a knack for getting graphically violent scenes into PG-rated films, as originally occurred with Raiders of the Lost Ark. The infamous scene in question has one of the villainous Nazis have his face melted off in thoroughly gruesome fashion once the Ark is opened, pretty much traumatising every child who watched it in the process. Over the several-second shot, we see the skin slowly peel off the man's face as he screams in agony, blood pouring downwards, as his eyes also seem to be reduced to blank oyster-like objects. Critics frequently complain about films such as Rambo being nauseatingly violent, but at least they're honest about what they are; nobody goes into a Rambo film expecting fluffy bunnies and flying horses. But going into Raiders, we don't expect to subject kids to a Nazi having his face skimmed off by an almighty power; even as an adult, it's absolutely revolting to watch, if undeniably effective.
