9. Halloween (Rob Zombie)

Rob Zombie seemed like a pretty good choice to remake Halloween, even if it was a horror franchise that most people didn't want to see rebooted (awful as Halloween: Resurrection was). The problem with the film, as with countless prequels and so on, is that it takes the mystery away from the murderer; aren't killers much scarier when their behaviour can't be dissected with pop psychology and easily-drawn lines of causation? Instead, the first act of Zombie's film goes back to fill us in on every detail about Myers' horrid upbringing, in effect trying to make us sympathise and even side with the guy, which is completely at odds with the original film. As a result of this needlessly expository explanation, Myers is reduced to a garden variety psychopath who is far away from the phantom that he was in the original film. The grotty style is there, but the characterisation is all wrong.
