10 Shocking Remakes Made By Directors Who Didn't Understand The Original

6. Straw Dogs (Rod Lurie)

Straw Dogs Rod Lurie takes everything that was thought-provoking and provocative about the original Sam Peckinpah film and turns it into a generic, homogenous thriller that's well-acted by James Marsden in particular, but is essentially just a feckless, sterile take on the savage 1971 original. The most contentious scene from the original film is one in which Dustin Hoffman's wife (played by Susan George) is raped by one of the builders working on her house, but the scene is fraught with ambiguity because, at least for a time, she appears to enjoy the assault. This proved hugely shocking with audiences and the media, and thus it was a surprise to absolutely no-one that the remake was going to elide this controversial scene. Though the rape happens in the remake, there's no ambiguity to it, and the film completely misses the original's point regarding violence; Dustin Hoffman's original protagonist is forever transformed, whereas the same cannot be said so easily in the remake.
