10 Silver Linings To Godawful Comic Book Movies

6. Green Lantern (2011) - A Big Angry Pink Guy

Kilowog Green Lantern Movie 1 1 Is the color green a curse for superhero movies? Hopes were high for DC's solo Green Lantern film as success would mean that the company could begin branching out with heroes other than Batman and Superman, but alas, Martin Campbell's adaptation left a lot to be desired and ended up delaying DC's plans for a cinematic universe by a number of years. It's difficult to choose only one aspect of the movie that prompted a negative critical response from the fans, but a boring script, weak characterization and an unlikable turn from star Ryan Reynolds certainly didn't help the films chances of success. (Side note: Please stop casting Ryan Reynolds in comic book movies. Please.) Bizarrely, one of the few things that actually works in the movie is a character who should have been far more difficult to adapt than the usually charismatic Hal Jordan. Fellow Green Lantern Kilowog only has a supporting role in the film, training Jordan to use his ring, but Michael Clarke Duncan's voice acting makes the CGI created character feel far more authentic than Blake Lively's phoned in performance as love interest Carol Ferris. Fan favorite Kilowog may seem like a ridiculous character to those unfamiliar with Green Lantern's source material, but in a movie where the main antagonist is a giant angry space cloud, the big pink brute is actually a welcome change of pace.
