10 Silver Linings To Godawful Films

6. The Battle Of Zion - The Matrix Revolutions

The Matrix Revolutions was without question a massive disappointment, and final proof that the Wachowskis were pretty much making it up as they went along with their two sequels. They just about got away with it in The Matrix Reloaded thanks to some outstanding action and the apparent promise of actual answers in part three, something they completely ballsed up with a meandering, unfocused narrative and an ending that epitomised the word "unsatisfying". Though the movie lacks the electrifying set-pieces of the previous movie, it does have one clear stand-out sequence, and that's the Battle of Zion, in which an army of 250,000 Sentinels planned to destroy Zion once and for all. Much of the scene's power comes from Captain Mifune, who leads the resistance effort to hold the Sentinels off: his epic rally speech and intensity while firing rounds from his APU made him one of the movie's more likeable characters, especially after he eventually succumbed to his injuries from the battle. Then there's The Kid coming to save the day, the Mjolnir just barely crashing through the gate in time, Trinity's death on the way to the Machine City, and Neo's negotiations with the Machine Baby that eventually stops the Sentinels attacking Zion. It's the only time the movie really has any forward momentum, and the subsequent battle between Neo and Agent Smith is nothing if not horribly disappointing by comparison.
