10 Slasher Horror Movies That Had No Right To Be This Good

5. Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

Despite going a tad off the rails in its fifth and sixth instalments, the Nightmare On Elm Street series, especially the first two films, are regarded as definitive entries in the slasher genre. Within the series, though, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare is seen as the odd one out for being so different from what came before.

Unlike the others, this flick took things in a wildly new direction. Set within the “real” world, the plot sees returning star Heather Langenkamp asked to appear in a new Nightmare On Elm Street production which will be helmed by Wes Craven (who returns to the director’s chair for this film). However, an otherworldly presence known as the Entity, which has taken the form of Freddy Kruger (once again played by Robert Englund), begins to wreak havoc on Langenkamp and the production.

The metacommentary approach New Nightmare takes is so far removed from the rest of the series that it's understandable that fans would be hesitant to dive in. Still, this new angle was exactly what the series needed.

Not only does the reality-bending script bring intriguing new ideas to the well-worn Nightmare formula, but the film is brimming with stunning and imaginative visuals throughout.
