If done right, a horror film can make anything scary. Jaws made us terrified of going swimming, Cujo ensured we kept distance from strange dogs, and J-horror Exte turned hair into a malevolent force.

However, one of the strangest things to get the horror treatment was a pair of jeans in Elza Kephart's insane horror-comedy Slaxx. Released on Shudder last year, the plot saw optimistic youngster Libby (Romaine Denis) get a new job at a very exclusive clothing store that's about to release a new line of jeans.

The company promote themselves as ethically moral to the public, however this couldn't be further from the truth. The fashion house has been exploiting workers in sweatshops and working them to death. In a ridiculous yet poignant metaphor, the souls of those workers have haunted these jeans and are out for vengeance against the influencers and fashionistas.

In less capable hands, Slaxx could've easily been another forgettable schlocky gimmick. But thanks to its snappy writing, wickedly cool presentation, and wild sense of humour, Kephart's fashionably gruesome flick proved to be a delightfully entertaining time.

Though outlandishly silly at times, Slaxx knew how to use its absurd premise to articulate a surprisingly effective humanitarian message.
