10 Slasher Movies That Never Got A Sequel (But Should Have)
9. The Burning
The Burning had all the makings of a hit slasher franchise. You've got a bunch of teens who go to a summer camp and get killed, you've got your deformed villain with a tragic backstory who comes back for revenge, and you've got plenty of exploitative female nudity. So what the hell happened? How did Friday the 13th become a huge phenomenon but The Burning was relegated to the status of obscure horror gem?
Well, the movie just came along a bit too late. Audiences already saw Friday the 13th the previous year, not to mention that Friday the 13th Part 2 just came out one week before The Burning. That's right, two slasher movies about a deformed maniac killing teenagers at a summer camp both hit theaters within seven days. In this one, the killer is Cropsey, a burn victim who commits murders using garden shears. It's as entertaining as any Friday the 13th, but the genre was so overstuffed that nobody was really paying attention to it. After all, that year alone there had already been Happy Birthday To Me, Graduation Day, My Bloody Valentine, Bloody Birthday and The Funhouse all within a few months.
The Burning unfortunately blended into the crowd, and now horror fans just have to imagine what could have been if Cropsey was allowed to strike again.
