10 Small Changes That Would Fix Terrible Films
2. No Twist Ending - Switchblade Romance
The Problem: Everything's going well in Alexandre Aja's grisly horror flick until the final hurdle, when we find out that of the two girls fleeing from the psychopathic, murderous stalker, one of them, Marie (Cecile de France), is actually the killer. Marie is in love with her friend Alex (Maiwenn) and going on a rampage to that effect.
Why It Would Fix The Film: The twist ending is one of the most ludicrous plot twists in cinema history, and completely details what was up to this point a hugely involving horror flick. Instead, the dumb ending makes no sense, completely calling into question everything we've sat through up to this point and basically manipulating audiences to the point of annoyance.
The problem is that it's difficult to just "ignore" the twist given how outlandish it is, and every subsequent attempt to rewatch the film is coloured by the reveal swirling around in our minds. Had the movie simply ended with the pair killing the stalker, it would have been a whole lot better. Aja tried to do something different, and failed: sometimes formula isn't so bad.
